About Universities Fighting World Hunger
In 2004, Auburn University and the United Nations World Food Programme began working together to create a "war on hunger" to address the pressing issues of world hunger and malnutrition.
The partnership was launched with a series of fundraising and awareness activities including a concert by US country music star Brad Cotter, a declaration from the Governor of Alabama making October 15th 'War on Hunger Day', a presentation of the Auburn/ WFP student designed logo, and a formal introduction of the student campaign leaders.
"For American students, it is important that they understand that hunger is interrelated with many of our own national issues such as peace and security of our nation and world, health care and the environment," said Dr. June Henton, Dean of the School of Human Sciences at Auburn University.
The collaboration spurred the development of anti-hunger education materials, hunger banquets, food drives, fundraising initiatives, and educational conferences. Four years later, the initiative has grown into a coalition of more than 60 universities and colleges throughout North America known as Universities Fighting World Hunger.
Auburn University
Located on the plains of east Alabama, Auburn University is one of the South's premier land-grant institutions. With its global agricultural initiatives and leading-edge nutrition and food safety research, the university is playing a major role in feeding the world.
The partnership with the UN World Food Programme is a continuation of Auburn's ongoing mission to serve the world through outreach, instruction and research. More importantly, the opportunity for Auburn men and women to lead students around the world in the global "War on Hunger" reinforces the very essence of the university's core value system-to produce technically competent graduates with progressive world views and a commitment to serving others.
The World Food Programme
Headquartered in Rome, Italy, WFP is the emergency food aid arm of the United Nations and is the largest humanitarian organization in the world. Each year, the agency provides food to an average of 90 million people, including 56 million hungry children, and at least 80 of the world's poorest countries. Every day, WFP has 20 aircraft in the sky and 40 ships on the seas delivering food shipments to areas of the globe most in need. WFP also uses food aid as a tool to encourage long-term economic development and sustainability through programs focused on school feeding, food for work and mother/child nutrition.
